      thnx, I read somewhere that the 'atmosphere' is the most difficult part to capture, so thnx again! :) I dont know exactly how to do this, but this time I experimented with kind of a halo around the tangerines. See especially the right side of the one on the right. That kind of works..

    Can you do a collection of paintings with exotic fruits? There are a lot of beautiful fruits that would make amazing still life compositions such as dragon fruit, papaya, mango, figs etc. especially if they are cut in half. Thank you! You are amazing!

    Do you have to wait for the oil pint to dry? And paint over the existing colour next day? Like layering colours on top does it have to dry first before coating on another colour on top

    • @josvanr
      @josvanr 2 місяці тому

      hi Skeleton, no, i put the painting in the freezer at night, to prevent the paint from drying. Most of the work is done painting wet on wet..

    Can you tell me please, what is rod or bar that we sometimes see across the screen? It seems you lean your hand on it. How does that work?

    • @josvanr
      @josvanr 5 місяців тому

      hi Jenet, it is just a simple rod with a square cross section, with a 2 inch rod glued to it on one end, to make an angle. The painting sits on a big wooden board on the easel, and I can latch the rod onto the big wooden board to provide horizontal support.

    How do you make sure your layers of paint don't mix with the paint underneath in 1 sitting? Everytime i try to pull off a still life in 1 sitting, i always end up getting blended smudges of color. I can't even do highlights.

    • @josvanr
      @josvanr 5 місяців тому

      hello Hooft, yes, there are several issues here: 1) use high quality paint, eg Old Holland or another artist grade. These paints have better opaqueness, so it is easier to put 'layers' on top of each other wet in to wet. 2) you can experiment with different types of brushes. Some brushes kind of scratch the paint away more than others. I also often thin out the hairs of the brush by cutting in to them on the broad side with a sharp knife. This way they don't exert as much pressure. Or sand the hairs on a sanding pad. 3) The higlights I often prefer to keep free of paint until the end. I paint on a white background, so I can kind of mimic the end result by scratching away the hilight, until I dab on the final white paint. This way I dont need to paint around the white dab to prevent the other paint from getting 'milky' 4) if there is too much paint to allow more to be added, I very regularly just lay a paper towel on top of the area to remove paint... So yes... hope this helps !

    I'm currently painting a still life with oranges myself and this timelapse video has been very helpful. I'm pretty much painting from imagination. As I'm a very inexperienced and slow painter and if I were to set up a proper still life the oranges would wither and rot by the time I was finished lol.

    • @josvanr
      @josvanr 5 місяців тому

      yes this is always a big 'challenge' or rather just a problem. Keeping the fruits fresh. I do put them in a fridge, buy new ones, or resort to photographs if everything else fails. But it is not ideal..

    I don't really know how to explain the emotion that I experience when I watch you. The closest I can come to it is the feeling of complete detachment from everything else around me. It is the same feeling that I get when I paint (not even close to your skill). The music is perfect and this may sound really corny but I think you must be a very elegant man to present your videos in the manner in which you do. Thanks for the 11 minuets of peace.

    Do you view the setup through a grid as well?

    • @josvanr
      @josvanr 5 місяців тому

      hi Felix, no, this time I photographs to make the composition, and I got the initial measurements from Gimp using the grid, to transfer them to the board. Apart from the measurements, I paint from life, as it is hard to get the tone/color balance right from photos. I do sometimes use a grid later on, if I'm in doubt about the symmetry of an object. One can easily compare the left and right contours that way. Maybe it would be interesting to use a big grid in front of the subject some time, like Mancini did.
